The City Council of Philadelphia has adopted a resolution to rename a segment of 5th Street, specifically between Huntingdon Street and Somerset Street, to “Jesse Malpica Bermudez Way.” This decision honors Jesse Malpica Bermudez, a prominent cultural figure, advocate, and champion of Latin music and community empowerment in Philadelphia. Jesse Malpica Bermudez dedicated over four decades to elevating Latin artists and musicians, co-founding the Asociación de Músicos Latinoamericanos (AMLA) and the Latin School for the Performing Arts. His work extended to community building and advocacy for the Latino community, earning him numerous accolades throughout his life and posthumously. The renaming serves as a permanent tribute to his contributions to Latin music, cultural advocacy, and community empowerment, aiming to foster a more inclusive and vibrant city.
