The Louisville/Jefferson County Metro Government Legislative Council has passed a resolution requesting the Planning Commission to review and propose amendments to the current Land Development Code (LDC) specifically concerning data centers. The LDC currently regulates 'Telecommunications hotels' as a single use, which includes data centers, without clear definitions or differentiation based on size. The Council acknowledges the increased interest in data center development within Louisville Metro and their significant impacts on infrastructure, energy consumption, land use, and environmental sustainability. The resolution directs the Planning Commission to consider best practices, regulatory frameworks from comparable jurisdictions, and the various impacts of data centers to better define telecommunications hotels and data centers, and to determine if different-sized facilities should be regulated differently. Recommendations are expected within 120 days of the Resolution's receipt by the Planning Commission.
