The Louisville Historic Landmarks and Preservation Districts Commission considered the designation of the Chickasaw Neighborhood as a Local Preservation District, adding it to the list in LMCO § 32.252(A). A petition with 200 verified signatures was received in August 2024. The Technical Review Committee met in June 2025 and recommended staff present the designation request, noting that a new report isn't needed if the district is on the National Register since 1990. The Chickasaw Neighborhood is already an approved National Register Historic District. The proposed designation aligns with criteria for its character, interest, and value as part of the city's development and heritage, particularly its role in African American social history and civil rights from 1890–1975. It also qualifies based on its association with underrepresented history and unique development patterns, including its formation as a middle-class interracial neighborhood. The Planning and Zoning Committee recommended approval on August 5, 2025. If designated by the Commission, the decision will proceed to the Metro Council for review and final enactment. The designation, if ratified, becomes official 30 days after Council enactment, followed by the appointment of an Architectural Review Committee and adoption of interim design guidelines within 60 days.
