The Energy and Environment Committee considered and approved a Motion (Rodriguez – Padilla) to instruct the Bureau of Sanitation, in coordination with the City Administrative Officer (CAO) and other relevant departments, to report within 60 days with long-term strategies to sustain and expand funding for the City's Brownfields Program. The program, operated by the Bureau of Sanitation (LASAN), aims to transform blighted or underutilized properties with environmental contamination into affordable housing, parks, business hubs, and community assets. Since its inception in 1998, the program has secured millions in federal and state grants and leveraged private capital. The committee's approval sends the matter to the full City Council for consideration. Strategies to be explored include federal, state, and philanthropic grant opportunities, as well as public-private financing models.
