The City of Atlanta has passed an ordinance authorizing the City Attorney to negotiate and the Mayor to execute deed restrictions for four nature preserves: Utoy Creek, Southwest, Mount Zion, and South River. These restrictions are to expand the City's participation in the Urban Forest Carbon Credit Program with Urban Forest Carbon Registry d/b/a City Forest Credits. The program quantifies carbon sequestration capacity of forested land and issues carbon credits that can be sold to generate revenue. This initiative aligns with the City's sustainability and greenspace goals, building on previous commitments like the Lake Charlotte Nature Preserve. The deed restrictions will ensure long-term conservation and limit development on these properties according to program requirements and final buffer percentages.
