The San Francisco City Council retroactively authorized the Port of San Francisco to accept and expend a $28,000,000 grant from the San Francisco Bay Area Water Emergency Transportation Authority (SF Bay Ferry). This grant is allocated to fund the Mission Bay Ferry Landing project for the period of June 1, 2025, through October 1, 2028. The Mission Bay Ferry Landing is intended to serve as a southern hub for ferry service, addressing regional transportation demand. This $28 million is a segment of a larger $55.4 million Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Clean Ports Program grant awarded to the Port, contributing to the overall $70.9 million San Francisco Waterfront Emissions-Free Ferry System Project. Key components of the broader project include the construction of the Mission Bay Ferry Landing, the installation of electrification infrastructure at the Downtown San Francisco Ferry Terminal, the procurement of a new 400-passenger zero-emission fast ferry, and the implementation of a maritime workforce development program. The Mission Bay Ferry Landing will feature shore power charging systems capable of 2MW rapid charging. The initiative emphasizes the deployment of new zero-emission technologies to significantly reduce CO2 emissions and fuel consumption across the ferry system. Additionally, the project includes a workforce development component designed to train over 200 participants from underserved communities in marine trades and water transportation fields, specifically focusing on zero-emission technologies.
