The San Francisco City Council has approved an ordinance to amend the Building, Subdivision, and Administrative Codes. This ordinance adjusts fees charged by the Department of Building Inspection (DBI) and establishes subfunds within the Building Inspection Fund. This action follows a 2023 fee study that determined the actual costs of providing DBI services. The study identified an estimated $84 million in eligible costs for recovery, compared to the $61.4 million currently collected. The new fee schedule is designed to gradually implement fee increases, with an initial partial increase in 2024, and this legislation makes the next incremental adjustment. The goal is to improve DBI's cost recovery performance over time, aiming for approximately 90% cost recovery and a projected revenue increase of over $13.8 million. The Planning Department's determination under the California Environmental Quality Act was also affirmed as part of this ordinance.
