The San Francisco Board of Supervisors retroactively authorized the Public Defender's Office to accept and expend a $3,400,000 grant from the Crankstart Foundation. This funding is designated to expand the capacity of the Immigration Defense Unit to address the increased demand for immigration defense services from March 1, 2025, through March 1, 2029. The ordinance also amends the Annual Salary Ordinance (File No. 240596 for Fiscal Years 2024-2025 and 2025-2026) to add four grant-funded positions: three Class 8177 Attorneys (3 FTEs) and one Class 8173 Legal Assistant (1 FTE). The grant aims to ensure that San Franciscans facing deportation have access to counsel and legal defense, including handling removal cases, supporting criminal record cleaning to avoid deportation, and managing appeals and federal habeas litigation. The Public Defender's Office will maximize the use of these funds for direct program expenditures by waiving indirect costs. The grant period is set from March 1, 2025, to March 1, 2029.
