The San Francisco Building Inspection Commission recommended approval of an ordinance that amends the Planning and Building Codes. This ordinance allows tourist hotels and motels to be used for "Interim Housing" without losing their original hotel use classification or changing their underlying occupancy classification. Interim Housing is defined as a residential use providing shelter and services to persons experiencing homelessness. The amendments also remove restrictions in Appendix P of the Building Code that required emergency housing to be on city-owned or leased land. This aims to utilize underutilized hotel and motel properties for emergency housing and streamline the process. The Code Advisory Committee and the Building Inspection Commission both voted unanimously to recommend approval of these changes.
