The City and County of San Francisco Board of Supervisors authorized the San Francisco Planning Department to apply to the Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG) and the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) to confirm existing and create new and revised designations of Priority Conservation Areas (PCAs). This resolution aims to align San Francisco's conservation efforts with the updated PCA framework adopted by ABAG in 2024. PCAs are identified areas that protect or invest in agricultural, recreational, or environmental resources, and their designation can provide opportunities for grant funding to support conservation, restoration, and recreational projects. The resolution outlines existing PCAs, proposed expansions to existing PCAs (such as India Basin Waterfront Open Space, Bayview Hill, Central Waterfront, and Twin Peaks/Glen Canyon Bioregion), and new proposed areas for PCA designation (including SF Core, Embarcadero Waterfront, Buena Vista Park/Corona Heights, Bernal Hill, Golden Gate Park, Mission Creek and Mission Green Zone Area, Islais Creek Area, and Yosemite Creek and Candlestick Area). The initiative is part of Plan Bay Area, a regional planning effort to integrate land use and housing growth policies with transportation investments and strategies to meet state-mandated greenhouse gas reduction targets and enhance regional resilience and sustainability. The Board of Supervisors adopted the resolution on June 3, 2025, and it was approved by the Mayor on June 6, 2025.
