The Board of Supervisors adopted the Sunset Chinese Cultural District’s Cultural, History, Housing, and Economic Sustainability Strategies (CHHESS) Report as required by Administrative Code section 107.5. The CHHESS Report, prepared by the Mayor’s Office of Housing and Community Development in partnership with the Sunset Chinese Cultural District, inventories the district’s cultural, historical, housing, and economic assets, and outlines recommendations to preserve and strengthen the community. It includes an analysis of demographic and economic trends in the district, documentation of tangible and intangible cultural heritage, a community engagement strategy, and six priority strategy areas. These areas address historic and cultural preservation, housing access and stability, economic and workforce development, land use planning, arts and culture, and cultural competency. The Report also identifies opportunities to landmark historic sites, support affordable housing, aid small businesses, improve transportation and community spaces, and promote multilingual services. In adopting this resolution, the City affirms its commitment to formalizing a collaborative City–community partnership and to implementing strategies to maintain the unique Chinese heritage of the Sunset District.
