The Board of Supervisors approved a resolution to accept and expend a $5,000,000 grant from KABOOM! to fund nature play improvements at up to eight children’s playspaces operated by the Recreation and Park Department. Phase I will renovate four parks—Crocker Amazon Purple Playground at 1398 Geneva Avenue, Randolph and Bright Mini Park at 100 Randolph Street, Silver Terrace Playground at 1700 Silver Avenue, and the Tenderloin Recreation Center at 570 Ellis Street—through play equipment upgrades, natural elements, site furnishings, and ADA enhancements. The grant terms prohibit inclusion of indirect costs, maximizing direct services to site improvements such as demolition, drainage, fencing, walkways, signage, planting, and resilient surfacing. The Parks Department will manage project design, community outreach, permitting, and ongoing maintenance. KABOOM! will retain up to 10% of cash contributions for administrative expenses and provide in-kind design and construction services through approved consultants and contractors. The General Manager is authorized to execute amendments to the grant agreement up to 10% of the grant value in consultation with the City Attorney, provided changes further project goals and do not materially increase City liabilities. Funding is contingent on securing $2.5M in public funds (from a 2020 bond) and $2.5M in private donations.
