The Recreation and Park Department has entered into a grant agreement with Wu Yee Children’s Services, whereby Wu Yee will provide a combined cash and in-kind grant of $1,125,000 to fund design and construction of improvements at the Tenderloin Recreation Center outdoor playspace. The funding sources include a $1,000,000 Cal Fire Urban Community Forestry grant and a $125,000 Head Start grant. Improvements will remove existing asphalt, reconfigure the layout to enhance safety and sightlines, introduce natural play elements such as tree logs, boulders, stump walls, and a pocket forest, and add seating areas and an outdoor classroom to support preschool programming under permits issued to Wu Yee. The project budget allows the RPD General Manager to approve modifications up to 10% of the total grant value. Wu Yee will engage licensed architects and design professionals, and RPD will administer the construction contract and post-completion maintenance.
