On March 25, 2025, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors adopted an ordinance amending the Planning Code to allow existing nonconforming public parking lots in the Central SoMa Mixed Use-Office (CMUO) and Mixed Use-Residential (MUR) Districts to continue operations through December 31, 2026. The ordinance enables parking lot operators in these districts to apply for a conditional use authorization to continue operations for an additional five-year period. The legislation affirms consistency with the General Plan, Planning Code Section 101.1, and was determined to be exempt under CEQA. It also finds the ordinance to be necessary for public convenience and welfare under Planning Code Section 302.

Why it Matters

This ordinance allows essential public parking facilities in transitioning mixed-use districts to remain operational, providing continued access while the city plans longer-term land use changes.
