The City Council of Philadelphia approved Resolution No. 250461 to rename the 400 block of South Broad Street between Pine and Lombard Streets as “Teddy Pendergrass Way” in honor of the South Philadelphia–born entertainer’s life and musical legacy. The resolution recounts Pendergrass’s rise from gospel singer and drummer to lead vocalist for Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, his solo career with five consecutive platinum albums, and his inspirational comeback following a 1982 accident that left him paraplegic. It directs the installation of street signs marking the honorary name and calls for an Engrossed copy of the resolution to be presented to Pendergrass’s family. No changes to land use, zoning, or physical street infrastructure are authorized by this act.
