Philadelphia City Council adopted Resolution No. 250504 renaming the 4700 block of Rising Sun Avenue between Wyoming and Mascher Streets to 'Officer Lauretha A. Vaird Way' in honor of Officer Lauretha A. Vaird’s bravery, sacrifice, and dedication to public service. Officer Vaird, a dedicated nine-year veteran of the Philadelphia Police Department and the first female officer killed in the line of duty, was fatally shot on January 2, 1996, while responding to a bank robbery at a PNC Bank on this block. The resolution recognizes her role as a single mother of two and her status as a role model cited by colleagues for her work ethic, kindness, and ability to connect with others. It notes her profound impact on the 25th District, the broader community, and her surviving family, particularly her two sons. Councilmember Lozada introduced the measure to preserve Officer Vaird’s legacy through permanent street signage. The resolution directs that an engrossed copy be presented to her family as a token of the City’s appreciation. This action ensures that daily traffic and residents on Rising Sun Avenue will be reminded of Officer Vaird’s service and sacrifice.
