The New York City Council held a public hearing and moved forward with Intro 1219, a local law to establish the East Harlem 125th Street Business Improvement District (BID). This BID will cover the commercial corridor along East 125th Street in Community District 11 and be funded by assessments on property owners within the district. The district is projected to finance enhanced street cleaning, security services, marketing and events, holiday lighting, and capital improvements to sidewalks and public spaces. Steering committee outreach documented support from 74% of assessed property value, 50% of properties, and 34% of commercial tenants. Once established, the BID will operate under oversight of the NYC Department of Small Business Services and be led by a board of local stakeholders. Services will kick off within six months of enactment, with a five-year initial term subject to renewal.
