The Cultural Heritage Commission recommended that the City Council consider the Southern California Telephone Company Exchange for inclusion in the list of Historic-Cultural Monuments. The property, located at 650-668 S. La Brea Avenue, is a two- and five-story telephone exchange building constructed in 1924 by the Southern California Telephone Company. It underwent an expansion adding two stories and an exterior remodel in the PWA Moderne architectural style in 1941, designed by architect Donald Parkinson and G.R. Morrison. The building has continuously housed telecommunications equipment since its original construction and is currently operated by AT&T. The Commission determined the proposed designation is categorically exempt from CEQA and conforms with the definition of a Monument. The vote for the recommendation was 4-0.
