The Council’s Arts, Parks, Libraries, and Community Enrichment Committee approved a motion directing the Bureau of Engineering, in coordination with the Department of Recreation and Parks and with input from LADWP, to initiate a comprehensive Vision Plan for Sheldon Skatepark that integrates a new roller-derby section in Phase II. The plan will unify the existing skatepark, adjacent LADWP trail, and roller-derby area into one continuous green space; enhance safety and connectivity through clear, accessible pathways, lighting, and safe parking; and improve landscaping with drought-tolerant, shade-providing trees and vibrant native California plants. Underutilized or “dead” spaces will be eliminated to maximize recreational and community use, while expanded seating, shaded areas, and a flexible community center will address park operations, programming, and community engagement to reduce vandalism. The Vision Plan will also balance active and passive recreation opportunities, reduce excessive fencing, and propose a phased implementation strategy that bridges current and future Proposition K phases. BOE, with assistance from RAP and LADWP, must provide a cost estimate and timeline within 30 days to finalize the plan by 2027. RAP is further instructed to incorporate the City’s park naming policy to ensure community input on any potential naming or renaming considerations.
