The Jacksonville City Council enacted Ordinance 2025-461, designating the commercial building at 231 Laura Street North as a local landmark. The building, owned by Historic Urban Core, LLC, is a two-story masonry vernacular commercial structure built in 1957. It is characterized by its rectangular form, flat roof with a large billboard, brick exterior, recessed doorway, plate-glass storefront windows, decorative terrazzo knee wall, and a corner signage feature on the second floor. The designation requires a Certificate of Appropriateness for any exterior alteration, new construction, demolition, relocation, or mothballing. The property meets criteria for landmark designation due to its cultural, historical, architectural, or archaeological heritage, the quality of its architecture, and its suitability for preservation or restoration. The Jacksonville Historic Preservation Commission reviewed and recommended approval on May 28, 2025, and the property owner did not oppose the designation. The Council approved the ordinance by a vote of 18-0 on August 12, 2025.
