The Jacksonville City Council is considering Ordinance 2024-940-E to designate the church building at 740 Van Buren Street, owned by Power House Miracle Center, as a local landmark under Chapter 307 of the city's Historic Preservation and Protection Ordinance Code. The property, historically known as the Pleasant Grove Primitive Church, was constructed in 1908 and has served the Oakland neighborhood as a social and cultural institution for over 100 years. On November 13, 2024, the Jacksonville Historic Preservation Commission reviewed and recommended approval of this landmark designation. The designation is based on the property's significant cultural, historical, and architectural value, and its suitability for preservation. Upon designation, a Certificate of Appropriateness will be required for any exterior alteration, new construction, demolition, or relocation affecting the landmark. The property owner has expressed no opposition to the designation. The ordinance directs the Chief of Legislative Services to notify the applicant, property owner, and appraiser, and to record the designation in the official records of Duval County and on the Zoning Atlas.
