The Columbus City Council's Zoning Committee approved a Council Variance (CV24-125) to allow the addition of a single-unit dwelling to an existing two-story office building at 66 Thurman Avenue. This decision facilitates a live/work scenario for the owner while retaining the commercial use of the existing structure. The project required several variances from the R-2F Residential District zoning requirements, including a reduction in required parking from eight to two spaces, a reduction in lot width from 50'-0" to 39'-5", and a reduction in lot area from 3,000 SF per dwelling unit to 2,329 SF per dwelling unit (4,659 SF total for the parcel). Additionally, variances were granted to reduce the maximum side yard from 10'-0" to 6'-8" and the required rear yard from 1,165 SF to 0 SF. Staff supported the request, noting that the variances were essential due to limited options for the addition's placement that comply with German Village guidelines, and that the project would improve the property's appearance by allowing a fire escape to be removed. The German Village Commission recommended approval with a 4-0-0 vote.
