The Chicago City Council approved the sale of 11 city-owned vacant parcels to NeighborSpace, an Illinois not-for-profit corporation, for a total of $11.00. The combined market value of these lots was assessed at $93,564 in June 2025. This initiative, part of the ChiBlockBuilder platform, aims to create an Urban Agriculture District near the intersection of 120th Street & Union Avenue and the Major Taylor Trail. The district will include an educational farm, a production farm, a Zen Garden, and a fruit orchard, developed in partnership with We Sow We Grow and the Morton Arboretum. We Sow We Grow has been farming on 11918 S. Union since 2016. The Department of Planning and Development selected NeighborSpace's application based on criteria such as project feasibility, community support, sustainability, applicant residency, and urban agriculture experience. The sale aims to repurpose vacant, costly, and tax-non-generating city lots into community assets.
