The City Council of Chicago approved an amendment to Section 4-58-030 of the Municipal Code to prohibit patrons from bringing their own alcoholic beverages (BYOB) on the south side of West Division Street between North Damen and North Western Avenues. The ordinance establishes Restricted Location (1.2) under BYOB regulations effective immediately upon passage. Under the updated code, restaurants and similar establishments are no longer permitted to allow BYOB on that specific block segment in the 1st Ward. The change closes a gap in the existing BYOB policy (Section 4-58-020) and removes previous exceptions that applied to that stretch of Division Street. The reserved clause for (1.1) remains untouched. This targeted amendment responds to community concerns about noise, litter, and public safety stemming from unregulated alcohol consumption in outdoor seating areas. The measure passed committee on April 8, 2025, and was adopted by the full Council on April 16, 2025. The ordinance will take effect upon its publication in the Municipal Code.
