This ordinance designates the 6300-6330 block of South Racine Avenue as “Honest John & Letha Mae Oliphant Ave,” honoring Englewood entrepreneurs John and Letha Mae Oliphant for their decades-long service and community investment. It directs the Chicago Department of Transportation to install and standardize honorary street signage alongside the existing official street name. The proposal, submitted by Alderman Gregory I. Mitchell in the 7th Ward’s Committee on Transportation and Public Way, was reported out unanimously on April 18, 2023. The Oliphants built their legacy through the L Supermarket, ice cream parlor, and later Sonny’s Cut Rate Foods and Liquors, providing vital goods and jobs in Englewood. Following fires and personal hardship, they further developed a 24-hour grocery and shopping plaza, demonstrating resilience and community leadership. The honorary name carries no address change but permanently commemorates their impact. The ordinance takes effect immediately upon passage and publication.
