The City of Los Angeles applied for and was awarded a Homekey Program grant from the State of California's Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD) for $24,800,000. This grant will be used to fund various Homekey projects throughout the city, which typically involve converting existing buildings (like motels or hotels) into permanent supportive housing or interim housing for people experiencing homelessness. The Housing and Homelessness Committee recommended accepting the grant and authorizing the General Manager of the Los Angeles Housing Department (LAHD) to negotiate and execute all related agreements. The City Council subsequently adopted this recommendation on June 25, 2024. The program aims to address homelessness by rapidly expanding housing options.
