The Houston City Council approved an interlocal agreement with the Harris County Flood Control District for the TIRZ 17 Detention Project. This project, estimated to cost $84 million, involves constructing a sub-surface detention basin and storm sewer improvements to alleviate flooding. The City of Houston sponsored a FEMA Hazard Mitigation Grant Program grant to partially fund the project. Per the agreement, the Harris County Flood Control District will contribute $20 million for construction, with Houston Public Works managing the project's design and execution. The initiative aims to relieve overcapacity on HCFCD Unit W151-00-00 by diverting and re-routing runoff, creating a relief storm water system to protect thousands of residents.
