The Columbus City Council authorized a $750,000 payment to settle a wrongful death lawsuit filed by the estate of Timothy Jay Wiggins. The suit arose from a July 23, 2023, traffic collision on Interstate 270 where a pickup truck driven by Mr. Wiggins struck a city fire engine. The fire engine was partially obstructing a travel lane after being involved in a separate, minor collision while attempting to use an emergency turnaround. The lawsuit alleged negligence by the city and two employees of the Columbus Division of Fire. This settlement resolves all claims related to the incident.
