The Chicago City Council has approved a significant area-wide rezoning in the 8th Ward. The ordinance, introduced by Alderman Michelle Harris, changes the zoning for numerous parcels from RS-2, RS-3, B1-1, and B3-1 to RT-4. The previous zoning designations included single-unit residential and neighborhood/community shopping districts. The new RT-4 designation allows for the development of two-flats, townhouses, and other multi-unit residential buildings. The affected area is bounded by East 95th Street and includes properties on S. Vernon, S. St. Lawrence, S. Champlain, S. Langley, and S. Burnside Avenues. The final vote occurred on November 14, 2025, following a recommendation to pass from the Committee on Zoning, Landmarks and Building Standards.
